For many New Zealand homes, rainwater collection is a sustainable and cost-effective way to supply household water. In some regions, it isn’t just a choice — it’s the only available source. However, when pairing tank systems with modern tapware, there are some important compatibility factors to keep in mind. Pressure levels, water quality, and ongoing maintenance all influence how well your bathroom fittings perform.
This guide outlines what to consider when connecting rainwater systems to contemporary tapware such as Newtech’s Evoke range, ensuring both efficiency and long-term reliability.
Unlike mains water, rainwater stored in tanks does not arrive pressurised. Left unassisted, gravity-fed tank systems often deliver water at much lower pressures — well below what modern tapware needs to function as intended.
Newtech’s Evoke tapware, for example, has a minimum operating requirement of 150 kPa. This pressure cannot be achieved by gravity alone, meaning a pump is essential in any tank system supplying Evoke tapware.
Without adequate pressure, performance can be compromised: flow may be weak, mixers may not balance hot and cold water properly, and internal components can wear prematurely. To avoid these issues, it’s best to size your pump carefully to deliver at least 150 kPa consistently, and ideally higher to align with standard mains pressure (typically 300–500 kPa).
Rainwater may be fresh from the sky, but once it’s stored in tanks, quality can vary greatly. Leaves, dust, bird droppings, and roof contaminants can all enter the system. Over time, even with leaf guards or diverters, fine sediment can accumulate in your tank.
If water is drawn through to your tapware without adequate filtration, these particles can settle in your plumbing, restrict flow, and damage sensitive components such as Neoperl® aerators and Sedal cartridges used in Newtech’s Evoke range.
Blocked aerators are one of the most common signs of poor filtration. Sediment and mineral deposits clog the mesh, causing water to spray unevenly or pressure to drop. While aerators are removable and easy to clean, prevention is far better than cure.
To protect both your tapware and household health, you’ll need an adequate filtration system between your tank and plumbing. Filters should be serviced regularly, and tanks should be cleaned periodically to prevent sediment build-up.
Even with the right pump and filters, rainwater systems require regular upkeep. Tank inspections, filter changes, and occasional plumbing checks will extend the lifespan of both your water system and your tapware.
Evoke tapware is built from premium 304 stainless steel and lead-free brass, finished in durable coatings such as Chrome, Brushed Nickel and Brushed Brass. With proper care and filtered water supply, these finishes remain resistant to staining, spotting, and corrosion for years.
Ensuring Lasting Performance
Pairing rainwater tanks with premium tapware is entirely possible, but it requires the right setup. A pump to achieve sufficient pressure, effective filtration to protect against sediment, and ongoing maintenance are all key.
With these elements in place, homeowners can enjoy the style, performance, and efficiency of Newtech’s Evoke tapware while making the most of their rainwater supply.
