Small bathrooms are an increasing trend in todays busy urban environment. Here's 5 handy tips to maximise the space in your mini retreat and help you make your small bathroom feel big, open and inviting.
Compact Size Cabinetry
Having a compact vanity unit can help to reduce your clutter, as it boasts more storage capacity than the traditional hand basin. We think the wall hung design strikes a nice balance between a handy amount of storage and an open feel for a smaller space. If do you require more storage and your space allows it, consider a thin-line mirror cabinet to store your cosmetics and other must-have items conveniently out of sight.
No Shower Doors
A shower door can pose some problems in a tight space. As an alternative, opt for a static glass panel, which will still keep the water contained while also being transparent so as to maximise the perceived size of your room. A shower curtain is a good cheap alternative, however, make sure to draw it back when the shower isn’t in use to open up the room.
Be Creative with Space
You want to make use of every available nook and cranny in a small bathroom. This includes areas you may not have thought of like the back of your door - the perfect spot for a small hand towel rail or robe hook. Try mounting the toilet roll holder on the side of your vanity if your short on wall space, or place shelves above your toilet for some added storage. When it comes to your bath, consider a corner mounted design for maximum space efficiency.
Mirror Illusions
Pull out every trick in the book to create the illusion of space. This includes having a nice big mirror to bounce light around your room. If possible, place the mirror on a wall opposite a window, and wallah… it’s like you’ve created a second window. Big tiles and large-scale patterns on walls make your space seem bigger than it is, while avoiding too many busy patterns, colours and textures will ensure your space doesn’t feel too segmented.
Light it up!
A predominantly light coloured, well-lit room will maximise your space. Employing a simple, bright colour palette with a small amount of an accent colour will make for an elegant aesthetic. Utilising downlights, wall mounted lights, LED Mirrors and/or skylights, while maximising the size of any
windows, will ensure your bathroom is sufficiently lit. However, avoid pendant lights for low-ceiling or particularly small bathrooms as it will cut into your headroom.
